Lions vote to donate $5K to Palace digital project; hear from VSHS Jazz Band

    The Vinton Lions Club held their regular Wednesday meeting at the Pizza Ranch. There were 42 members and 8 guests present.  The Lions Club members discussed a motion to donate $5,000 to the Palace Theatre’s digital projection campaign. The motion passed by a unanimous vote. “Generally we don’t donate such a large sum of money to any one project, but the Palace Theatre is such a fantastic community asset, and they need our help,” Don Eells, club president said.

Central Lutheran holds ground-breaking for new gym

CLS students line  the perimeter of the new gym building with the facade of old gym in background.   When they won the $100,000 from the U.S. Cellular Calling All Communities fund-raiser, the Central Lutheran School students had help from family and alumni from virtually every state in the nation. Now, the school and its leaders are putting that money to work in Newhall. They held a ground-breaking ceremony Wednesday morning for the new gym and kitchen project, which is estimated at around $700,000.

Virginia Holsten is Vinton Women's Club Woman of the Year

Virginia Holsten reacts with happiness and surprise as she learned she was named Woman of the Year.   Long-time Vinton librarian Virginia Holsten was  extremely surprised and touched when she received the annual Woman of the Year award at the Vinton Women's Club spring banquet on Tuesday, April 22.  “It was so overwhelming,” she said. “So many people said so many nice things.” Jill g. Lockard-Bopp, who grew up as a neighbor to “Ginny,” and Jill’s husband, Tony, led the ceremony to honor Virginia at the Vinton Country Club.

Quilting Ladies invite Freedom Quilts founder Betty Nielsen to Vinton

Betty Nielsen spoke to an audience at Bethlehem Lutheran Church Saturday morning.  Betty Nielsen and her family have comforted thousands of grieving families since Sept. 11,  2001. Her Freedom Quilts have been on display in the traveling 9/11 Memorial, the Pentagon and thousands of homes of people who have lost a loved one. On Saturday, Nielsen made her first visit to Benton County, thanks to a request from the Quilting Ladies of Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Vikes of the week: Cara Hoch, Juan Carlos and Michael Lint

Michael Lint, Juan Carlos and Cara Hoch, Vikes of the Week at VSHS this week. The following three Vinton-Shellsburg High School students were named as Vikes of the Week for the kindness they showed others.  Cara Hoch and Juan Carlos (Mr. Vettraino)  They have spent time this week during study halls and after school sorting and distributing the fundraisers that their class sold last Trimester.  They have done this voluntarily as their class was over at the end of the second trimester and all grades were in.

Vinton resident flies again after years thanks to Windsor Manor Dreams campaign

Gloria McNaughton readies for take-off. She first flew as a teenager but has not flown for decades.  Gloria  McNaughton surprised all the guys at the airport when she showed up for flying lessons at an airport in Texas. She was only 18, and she was a female. “We didn’t have many female pilots then,” she said Saturday at the Vinton airport. McNaughton got her pilot’s license shortly after graduating from high school.

The VS Jazz Band posed for a formal photo after their performance. Several Vinton-Shellsburg Jazz Band fans, including parents and relatives, students and friends of the performers, went to Des Moines to see the Vinton-Shellsburg Jazz Band play in the State Championships for the first time since 2000. Many of those who went took cameras and came back with many photos. The pictures that accompany this story were taken by Jan Andreesen, mother of  Jazz Band member Claire Andreesen.

Resident at Windsor Manor has her Dream Come True!

  Last winter, the Team at Windsor Manor got together and asked residents about their dreams with the goal to make them come true.  “Windsor Manor’s philosophy revolves around quality of life and maintaining independence.” states Bethany Clemenson, Manager   What better way to increase quality of life than to fulfill some dreams?   After reviewing all the dreams an idea was born and that idea became the Operation Dream Builders program.

Quilt to raise money for Caleb Stewart's fight against cancer

Cindy Osborn made this quilt as a fund-raiser for Caleb Stewart's family; it is on display at FSB.  Cindy Osborn, a customer service representative at Farmers Savings Bank & Trust-Vinton, has made a quilt as a fund-raiser for 13-year-old Caleb Stewart, who is undergoing treatment for cancer. Osborn volunteered to make the 70-by-100-inch quilt; Farmers Bank paid for the materials. The quilt is now on display at the bank. Osborn used the Double Star Crossing pattern from Thimbleberries, and made the quilt of gold, sage, green, plum, mustard and red.

V-S art students win many top honors at annual WaMaC Art Fair April 13

Brea Stephenson won first place and artist's choice with this three-piece acrylic painting. While the Vinton-Shellsburg Jazz Band was competing in Des Moines, the Art students were also just off Interstate 80, competing in the annual WaMaC Art Fair at Tiffin.  The event takes place in the city of a conference school each year.  This year, the V-S artists won several honors, including a Best of Show and Artists' Choice, voted on by the partipants.
